Company Overview

Located in the northwest corner of South Carolina in West Union, Sharpe Manufacturing specializes in milling and turning. They offer customers quick turn around on special order, low quantity parts, as well as on-time delivery for production quantities. The company machines a wide variety of metal and alloys including non-ferrous, stainless and carbon steels. Their dedication to quality and customer service has enabled them to grow the business since 2000. For so many in the southeast region, Sharpe Manufacturing is one shipping day or phone call away in times of need. They currently have 23 employees on staff.

Situation

Sharpe Manufacturing was looking to improve internal operations and increase their customer base by earning an ISO Certification. Following a meeting with a local community college, they suggested for the company to reach out to the South Carolina Manufacturing Extension Partnership. Management turned to SCMEP to develop and implement all quality systems and procedural documentation necessary to meet the requirements of ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System Standards.

Solution

Over the next year, Sharpe Manufacturing was guided through the documentation required for the ISO Certification. Weekly meetings were held with the company’s Quality Management Systems Manager. Included in the QMS documentation development and implementation services were reviewing current practices, making recommended improvements, developing a quality manual, developing procedural and instructional level documentation, and finalizing and integrating documentation. ISO 9001:2015 Internal Auditor training was also completed.

Results

Sharpe Manufacturing is now ISO Certified. This process helped the company to identify areas where they excelled as well as areas of improvement. They were able to develop internal audits, create a calibration system, post performance measures, develop and post QMS documents, and implement ISO training. The company also invested $25K in purchasing a new Enterprise Resource Planning system to assist with reporting and documenting information. As a result of the training, Sharpe increased its investment on workforce practices and employee skills by $9.7K.

“We would definitely recommend SCMEP to anyone looking into an ISO certification. Becoming ISO certified was something we really never expected to take on as a project, but the funding, guidance, and encouragement provided gave us the confidence we needed to become ISO CERTIFIED!” Jeff Sharpe, President, Sharpe Manufacturing
