5-S

5-S

Our 5-S program is conducted in either (3) or (5) days depending on the scope of the project, the understanding of 5-S, and the support resources available. The relationship between 5S and the other lean disciplines (SMED, Kanban, Standard Work, etc.) are discussed. In addition, the benefits of 5-S as it relates to Safety, Quality, and Productivity are demonstrated. The team is trained on identifying the necessary items and removing the unnecessary (First S). Then they develop storage methods, such as shadow boards, etc, and identify locations (Second S). Next, the team then cleans the area intensively, including painting, if necessary, (Third S). Fourth, they are then shown examples of how to revisit the first 3-S’s and identify ways to prevent the need for cleaning and how to stabilize the conditions they have worked hard to achieve. During this phase we discuss the use of “Checklist” and “5S Patrol Sheets” (Fourth S).

The long term sustaining objective is then discussed as part of the 5-S system (Fifth S).

5-S Benefits:

  • Improve quality
  • Achieve work standardization
  • Decrease changeover time
  • Improve safety
  • Reduce storage costs
  • Reduce cycle times
  • Reduce machine down time
  • Boost employee moral as well as work environment
